Times of our Lives: 2008 – Same As It Ever Was

After the violent authoritarianism of the Spanish establishment in Catalunya, it was a staggering coincidence to find Bob Marley’s fine 1979 album was released 38 years ago on this day. From memory, it was the second Marley album I heard after Rastaman Vibrations, which a friend opens. While The Clash and The Ruts opened my ears to reggae, friends once again opened my eyes.

2008 was little better than now for different reasons, as the greed of the banks and financial ‘elite’ wrecked the world, forcing a recession upon all of us. The poorest were hardest hit, with uprisings across Africa, Asia and Latin America. Mother Nature then wrought havoc with a cyclone hitting Myanmar and an earthquake in China.

The journey to hell in a handcart is taking us a lot longer than I thought it would.

As well as sanity, we said goodbye to:

  • Gus Chambers
  • Mitch Mitchell
  • Richey Edwards (declared legally dead)
  • Arthur C. Clarke
  • Roy Schneider
  • Reg Varney
  • Harold Pinter
  • Barry Morse
  • Jack Douglas
  • Danny Federici
  • Al Wilson
  • Jimmy McGriff
  • Bo Diddley
  • Isaac Hayes
  • Johnny Moore
  • Neal Hefti
  • Levi Stubbs
  • Odetta
  • Eartha Kitt
  • Vincent Ford
