Times Of Our Lives: 1982 – The End Of An Era

deadmen-xlarge

1982, the end of the first golden age. Music would go into something of a lull during the next half-a-dozen

We welcomed The Tube, which was ground-breaking at the time. A fine show, if a little hit and miss musically. From memory, it was the only live music television programme on primetime. The Old Grey Whistle Test was still late night BBC2 but Channel 4’s offering was the first in a production line of ‘Yoof TV’.

The opening programme was noted for including The Jam who’d announced that they were to split earlier in the year. From memory, they played a two or three song set to the closing credits and then carried on afterwards.

An idea of how ‘big’ they were at the time came when the announcement featured on the BBC’s Nationwide programme, an early evening current affairs show which had been running since the late-60s.

The Jam’s final tour ran through mid-December and we were at Wembley on 5th December 1982, having applied for the original two night’s at the Arena and relieved when it was extended for a further three nights. A friend’s parents were going to some theatre awards that evening so armed with a lift home we set off for a memorable night. Worthy I think of a post in its’ own right.

In the meantime, Simon Wells’ account of last night of the tour at Brighton is here. Wembley was considerably better than the Brighton gig sounded.

As an extra – the hors d’oeuvre before the main playlist – below is an unreleased US compilation which was ‘binned’ by the Weller’s for including A Solid Bond In Your Heart.

Anyway, down to the business of the day. Today’s playlist is here (if this link doesn’t work, click here to listen in your browser) with the tracklisting below:
